Discovery Creative Essay

He sat lazily on the cold ceramic tiles of his bedroom, resting his back against the rigid wooden framework of his single bed. With legs outstretched, chest gently dipping up and down and his forehead submissively being supported by his fingertips, Jonas Schmidt reminisced upon the caring and affectionate figure of his father. He reflected upon their journey; a collage of memories flashed through his mind- from the struggle in fleeing Germany and the rise of Nazi power, to the hardships in attaining full Australian citizenship. Seeking refuge in Australia had eventually brought them peace- the beauty of the natural landscape, morphed with the laid-back and generous attitudes of their local community had endowed them with a new life. Together they were ready for a fresh start- until war broke out in 1939. The bloody war. The god-forsaken war. All that remained sat idly in his lap, symbolising the remnants of his father. Slowly, Jonas opened the box; he penetrated into what seemed to be the past, and lifted out the first piece of history – his father’s military uniform. Harold Schmidt wandered into the mess tent of the army base, eager to fit in with the energetic cluster of young Australian men. As he pealed back the doors of the tent, a cacophony of excited noises filled the atmosphere. Thunderous laughter resonated through the room, as men told stories of their past conquests. The clink of mugs echoed, as they acknowledged each other and proceeded to down copious amounts of alcohol. The majority of the men, dressed in the same military uniform as his own, were of the traditional background- broad shoulders, bushy hair and cheesy grins. Ecstatic faces lit up the tent, reminding Harold of the same emotion displayed by his son when they were together. Nervously, he walked up to a group of them, craving to experience the sense of mateship, understanding and acceptance that seemingly emanated from their discussions. Yet at the same time, he was fearful to discover the contrary. â€Å"Hey mate, pull up a chair and join us†, slurred one of the men at the table. â€Å"What’s ya name mate?† â€Å"Er†¦Harold. Harold Smith†, mumbled Harold nervously, not wishing to reveal his German background. The members of the circle eyed  him suspiciously; noticing his distinct physical differences and outlandish accent. â€Å"So where ya from?† â€Å"Brisbane†, he lied. The ring of uniforms erupted into laughter. â€Å"Ah mate, don’t worry, there’s no need to lie about anything here†¦right? We’re all friends.† He indicated around the circle: â€Å"Well that’s Buffer, Swarley, Bomber, Richie and Dougie- we’re all mates from before. Oh, and they call me Shelley, after the missus.† Another round of laughter shook the table. â€Å"Anyway, welcome to the gang†, he said. â€Å"We’ll look after you†. Shelley extended his hand forward.  Ã¢â‚¬Å"This is going to be alright†, thought Harold, as he shook the warm and assuring hand of the Australian. Suddenly, the alarm signalled to direct the soldiers to prepare to move out. â€Å"Alright lads!†, yelled Shelley, as they all stood up to leave. â€Å"Let’s kill the flamin’ Jerry and send ‘em back to where they came from!† Harold instantly gulped at the prospect of killing his own kind. Sweat saturated his uniform, as he reluctantly marched out of the tent. Jonas retreated from his dream-like state, pondering the reality of the hallucination. Solemnly, he laid the uniform down on the bed with respect. Suddenly, a flash of metal penetrated his eyes, as a crack of light from behind the curtains illuminated the jagged edges of his father’s war medals. Jonas clutched the remnants of his father firmly in his hand; once again returning to the illusory world†¦ As the lights dimmed, Harold stood apart from his platoon. Rising to the rank of First-Lieutenant, he had almost complete command over a number of his fellow soldiers, including his new-found friends. Despite regretting each time he shot an enemy German, Harold had caught the attention of his superiors. However, it was a completely different story amongst his own people. Even at this military celebration, Harold could feel the cynical gaze of the soldiers infiltrating into his inner being. Buffer, Bomber and Dougie deliberately avoided eye-contact with him. Swarley and Richie refused  to sit next to him at the table. Even Shelley eyed him apprehensively; tension developed exponentially between the two former friends. Thus, Harold stood distantly from the group. â€Å"Maybe it’s because I’m an officer now†, he thought. â€Å"Or maybe it’s because they are jealous at my medals. They may have even discovered that I am German-born.† Nevertheless, Haro ld sobbed deeply. He felt lonely. Cursed. Like an outsider. Once again, Jonas withdrew from the vision; his eyes moist, as he expressed sympathy for his father. Delicately, he positioned the medals on top of the chest pocket of the uniform, before reaching into the box once more. His hand brushed the cold crisp metal of the 6-round revolver – the standard-issue side-arm for all officers. His mind drifted away yet again†¦ â€Å"So you’re telling me you’re one of them!†, yelled Shelley, as he stood just centimetres from Harold’s face. Trust. Companionship. Expectations. All broken from the discovery of one word. â€Å"Get off me! That’s an order!† cried Harold, as he clumsily tried to free himself of the fierce headlock that Buffer and Bomber had on him. â€Å"You’ll be court marshalled for subordination!!† â€Å"Does it look like I give a damn? We’re all bloody fighting alongside a Jerry! One of THEM! The same animals that were shootin’ at us ‘bout a minute ago!† â€Å"I’m not one of them†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"Shut up! You’re not one of us! You don’t belong here!† With that, Shelley lunged forward and grabbed Harold’s revolver from the holster; muted sounds amalgamated with blurred images as a flurry of action erupted. Jonas jerked ferociously from his revelation; perspiration seeped tentatively down his neck and onto his shirt. He was almost hyperventilating now, as he endeavoured to eradicate the graphic imagery from his mind. Suddenly, the doorbell chimed. Shocked by the abrupt disturbance, he swivelled around to face the doorway. Through the translucent glass, Jonas made out the silhouette of a male figure- standing upright, proud and tall. As his mother unlocked the door, he witnessed a look of disbelief emanate from her face. â€Å"Could it be†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Jonas muttered to himself, as his heart continued to race. The door opened, bringing with it†¦ †¦ a new hope.

Many parts of crude oil are not harmful to the environment but some parts of it are (4) It is composed of hydrocarbons. which naturally occur in nature, which means that there are naturally occurring microorganisms with the ability to break down these hydrocarbons. (8) That being the case, when large quantities of oil are unnaturally released into the environment it needs to be cleaned up in a timely manner so as to lessen the impact on animals living in the environment. Sometimes accidents happen and oil is spilt across the natural landscape, whether onwhethereither on land or in the ocean. Since the 1970’s the occurrence of oil spills has decreased (13) but there are still around 14,000 spills in the United States each year (1). When spills like these occur we as humans have a moral obligation to clean them up. This leads to the question of how to go about the task. Currently, there are multiple ways to cleanse oil from marine environments, one of the many places where these disasters have occurred. If I was Arthur Anderson I would have revealed to the SEC the wrongdoings of Enron. The Enron debacle was one of the biggest accounting scandals in the 21st century. The bankruptcy the company filed on December 2, 2001 represented the largest bankruptcy in Unites States history. The executive management team of the company cooked up the accounting books of the company in order to receive multi-million dollar bonuses. A year before the company revealed the truth about its true finances the Enron common stocks were valued at over $90 a share. A year later the company’s common stock became a penny stock. The deception and fraud the company was able to achieve was incredible considering the fact that during the late 1990’s Enron was named the most innovative company by the Fortune Magazine for five consecutive years. Two of the key accounting practices that the company used to defraud the public was market to market accounting and off balance sheet liabilities. The market to market accounting practice allowed the company to estimate future earnings. The managers and accountants of the company inflated earnings astronomically. In 2000 the company recognized over a billion dollars in earnings when in reality the company did not make any money. The executive management team of the company colluded with its auditors, Arthur Anderson, to hide the true accounting position of the company for years. The revelation of the Enron scandal scared a lot of investors. As a consequence the U.S. Congress passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 in order to raise investor confidence in the financial markets. Thousands of investors lost millions of dollars including the employees of Enron which had a pension plan that was funded solely on the value of Enron stocks. The Advantages and Disadvantages of Surfing the Internet free essay sample

The media is revolutionary. In less than a century, it conquered our Planet successfully, never reaching a peak, always improving for the better, making the rise of its â€Å"empire† a scandal. The internet is a medium that has changed our lives ever since it was invented. Just like its predecessors, it wasn’t warmly welcomed by everyone despite its ever-growing base but this little 40-year-old media â€Å"reinvention† will never stop shocking us so what are really the advantages and disadvantages of surfing the Internet? To browse the internet, all you need is a computer, an affordable machine that is now in almost every single house, and some money to subscribe monthly for the connection’s service; also affordable. It would be really unfair and simply wrong to describe what the internet offers but the words â€Å"everything† and â€Å"anything† might be enough as the net’s content is more than diverse so if you need to know anything about something, just â€Å"google† it! Google is a verb now; it means â€Å"search it on Google†, a domain motor that offers you help when you’re looking for something on the web. We will write a custom essay sample on The Advantages and Disadvantages of Surfing the Internet or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Internet is perfect for research; when a student is asked to prepare an assignment, a project, etc., it’s very helpful but parents need to be aware of that and not everything written on a website can be 100% true. Also, the internet can be fun thanks to websites such as YouTube, Flickr, etc., you can tune in to watch any videos or view any photo! Plus, social media is what made a star out of the net because it helps people connect wherever they are! However, social media like Facebook and Twitter kill the person’s privacy and a lot of people can have access on what they are doing but then again, wasn’t it their decision in the first place, to get on Facebook or start Twitter-ing? Therefore, parents need to limit their children’s surfing time and censure some rated R websites because Internet can become an addiction and offer inappropriate stuff. Already 40 but still a teenager, the internet, rebellious, shocking, not so typical and ever-changing, offers you everything you need even if inappropriate at times so it’s your choice to have access to it or not.

what i think about psychology Essays - Freudian Psychology

Psychology is one of my favorite courses that I am taking this semester. Before taking this course, I thought it was a course designed to teach people how to deal with patients with mental health issues. Needless to say I now know better. Chapter one was the most significant to me because it shed a whole new light into what I thought was Human Growth and Development. After each class, I see the reality of what I have just learned in class. Most of the chapters we studied were very interesting to me. Each of these chapters carried strange and different information that stimulated my thoughts about the future, past, and even what is taking place in my life right at the time I was learning. It was a reflection of all the biological, physical, cognitive, socio-cultural processes that have taken place in my life time and of which some, of the characteristics will stop, change, and fluctuate as I get older. The one thing that I would do to improve the way this course is taught is to go on class field trips to a mental ward at the hospital. The thing that I think would improve student interaction in this course is to have group class projects. The principle that I learned in this course I plan to apply is to try reading people situations and mental capacities a little better. Because at my job I encounter a lot of personalities and people with a lot of mental illness. The major that I pursuing is Computer Information System at Calhoun Community College. This course will help me in my computer field to adapt to a lot of stressful situations that I might encounter on the job. If I was a clinical psychologist in China I would have to understand that it might be against their religion to diagnosis a patient it might cause a family to become outcast in the city. So I wouldn?t do anything to cause a family grief or hardship while I?m treating their family member. Although I enjoyed all the chapters we have studied so far, chapter one is the chapter I will like to appreciate. In this chapter, I will throw more light on the Freudian stages of development. According to Freud, people develop through five psychosexual stages in which the focus of pleasure changes. These stages are Oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, latency stage, and the genital stage respectively. Each of these stages has a unique region of the body that children focus on the mouth, anal stage; child pleasure focuses on the anus, phallic stage; child?s pleasure depends on the genital, just to state a few. This is very appealing to me because I have seen the truth of this statement to some extent in my two sons. Despite the fact this theory has been revised by a number of psychoanalytic theorists that came out with an analogy which state that Freud place more emphasis on sexual instinct without regarding cultural experience of an individual development. I still notice some pieces of truth in his theory in my sons. In conclusion, I am proud to say that this course has been more than a lot learning experience for me. It stimulated a new way of thinking in me and made me aware of my lack of intuitive and abstract thinking about the world and its inhabitants. At first it was difficult for me to understand why certain behaviors, characteristics are peculiar to a certain age group, degrees in sight, hearing in adulthood but with this course I have come to learn and appreciate these differences. It has provided me with information that will help me interpret and analyze situations that will come along in my life in a more reasonable manner than before. I really liked this class. I am still amazed and surprised at how relaxed and enjoyable and enriching the class has been for me.

Market Entry Into Kenya for a Food Franchise Essay Example

Market Entry Into Kenya for a Food Franchise Essay Example Market Entry Into Kenya for a Food Franchise Essay Market Entry Into Kenya for a Food Franchise Essay BNU5013 – International Management Strategies Post-Module Assignment for Prof. Minyuan Zhao The topic for our team presentation was the expansion of Global Franchise Architects (GFA) into Kenya. The group selected this company as we had just completed a communication strategy for them on how to expand in India, and one of our colleagues who is from Kenya thought that it might be a viable option for GFA to expand into Kenya. This paper will attempt not to repeat any facts stated already in the presentation, unless required to highlight a specific point. At a high level the group agreed, by a democratic process, to the consensus that GFA should not expand into Kenya, but I would like to disagree with that assessment after further research and analysis on my own. The key strengths of GFA are: 1) Operational excellence: This helps the investor to get a high Return on Investment (ROI) 2) Portfolio of 9 brands: Having multiple brands provides the investor to open combined stores with different brands or pick and choose the brands that they want to focus on. The main highlights that make Kenya an attractive market are: Positive GDP growth Lower interest rates- cheaper credit access Inflation down ( 5%) Market: 4 major cities opportunity – Nairobi (4M), Mombasa (1. 5M), Nakuru (1M), Eldoret (. 8M) – Majority Western style taste, entrenched â€Å"eating out† culture – High proportion of young and out-going population. Competition – 2 international (South African) food franchisers + local brands. – All have limited menus, not well managed and expensive. While risks entering Kenya are: High oil prices Exchange rate fluctuation Political stability The first thing that one needs to look at while deciding to enter a market is whether there is a demand for the product being sold and the spending capacity of the consumers. In the last year the Kenyan economy has been recovered from a slump and is currently booming. At the same time the fast food business has been growing with increased consumer spe nding (1). A new entrant can take advantage of the vacuum created by the closure of fast food stores due to the post-election violence and global economic slowdown. The second thing is how a company can differentiate itself from its competitors. GFA relies on its operational capabilities along with locally sourced produce to provide a high ROI. There are a few ingredients that are flown in from the central kitchen in Thailand like cheese to maintain a consistent standard of quality but the rest all are procured locally. With the recent explosion of high quality local produce (2) the franchisee would not have to rely on exported goods alone which result in higher cost of goods sold and lower profits. CAGE Analysis: While performing CAGE analysis to determine if GFA should enter Kenya or not the first thing compared to was the current operation in Sudan. Some things that stood out during this analysis were the similarities between how Starbucks launched and operated in China, a tea drinking country with low copyright protection. Cultural: International food tastes in major cities like Nairobi and Mombasa and the willingness to pay a premium for Western products Presence in Sudan cannot be leveraged due to differences in culture and local food preferences ADMINISTRATIVE: Lack of TM protection e. g. Brand Pizza Inn operated by a different owners of Pizza Inn U. S GEOGRAPHIC: Local Procurement of 65% of COGs, Rest would need to be shipped from Thailand Easily accessible from India and Bangkok by sea and air. Eastern and Central Africa’s financial and communication hub ECONOMIC: $838 GDP per capita, very low $ but users in city willing to pay a premium for western products Agricultural based economy, ensuring good supply of raw material required for the food business If GFA can create an image of an international provider and carve a niche the fast food market it can definitely succeed. Referring to the FDI decision tree along with the cage analysis one can deduce that it would be viable to enter Kenya but only if GFA can find the right contact to franchise with. GFA should not go in for the sake of going but conduct a thorough search for the right to local partner, one who understands the rules and regulations on the country and has operated other retail business in the country. AAA Strategy Implications: Once a decision has been made to enter the country, GFA would need to decide which of the Adaptation, Aggregation Arbitrage (AAA) strategy to excel at. It is very hard for any company to excel at all three at the same time but focus on different aspects or hybrid of two approaches as its strategy evolves. Below is a quick look at each of the three strategies: Adaptation: GFA will have to modify its menus to suit the local taste. It cannot try and replicate the menu that it serves in Sudan due to the various culture and eating habit differences. It’ll also do well to adjust its procurement strategy of raw material to adjust to the local supply chain management model. GFA would also have to adapt on how the product is marketed and the structure of the store i. e. independent Pizza stores versus joint Pizza and Ice cream store as highlighted by how the other franchisees operate in Kenya. Most are run as joint stores and in conjunction with other retailing outlets or petrol pumps. Having said that GFA might also differentiate itself from competition by providing high end Pizza stores like Pizza Hut does in asia. Aggregation GFA has been in operation for over a decade and there are definitely things it can aggregate amongst its distributed operations, things like Kitchen design knowhow, supply chain setup, marketing collateral, basics of the menu etc. It can also further aggregate the shipments to its two African country franchisees to lower cost of shipping and distribution. Even though the two might have different menus, they would still need the same basic products that are imported like cheese, kitchen equipment etc. Arbitrage Though GFA cannot arbitrage to lower labor costs or take advantage of costs in India or Thailand as the costs in Kenya are pretty cheap, what it can do is arbitrage on the quality of the products to charge a premium. It can get high quality cheese and sauces that its competitors cannot easily replicate and charge a premium for it while at the same time keeping its core recipes a secret. ADDING Value To confirm the entry into a new market one can perform a quick ADDING analysis and see if the entry adds any economic value or not. The image below is a quick snapshot of my analysis: pic] Adding Volume: GFA will definitely be able to add volume to its overall numbers by adding more stores Decreasing Cost: GFA might be able to lower the cost for franchisees a bit in its Sudan operations by sharing some transportation and logistics cost with Kenya especially on items that have to be shipped from India or Thailand. Differentiating: GFA will definitely be able to differentiate itself in the local Kenyan market as well in other markets by having international operations in multiple countries and continents. Improving Industry Attractiveness: GFA won’t be able to make too much of a difference on this front, though it will have some initial mover advantage especially since a lot of the other fast food stores shutdown during the last economic downturn. Neutralizing Risk: In theory GFA will be able to neutralize risk by diversifying across multiple countries but in reality it might be running the risk of spreading itself too thin. Also by moving into a country like Kenya which does not have stable political environment it might run into the risk of its stores being shut, which should not impact GFA as much as its franchisor. Generating Knowledge: GFA will be able to learn on how to operate in developing economies in Africa and if successful can utilize this knowledge to further expand on the continent. Having done the basic analysis the last thing GFA can look at how its potential competitors are performing in Kenya. Innscor Kenya, a part of Inscor Africa (a Zimbabwe based company with multiple brands) moved to Kenya3 moved to Kenya using the franchise model. It also operates like GFA with Multiple brands under one umbrella. Inscor found the Kenyan market to be the most promising on the continent4, where it soon further expanded its operations. Keeping such reference points in mind I think GFA should definitely look at expanding in Kenya through franchising with a suitable partner.
